Decoded: Miscellaneous Site Work Terminology (Part 5 of 5 in the Decoded Terminology Series)

Every construction project brings together professionals with distinct technical perspectives—from contractors managing day-to-day execution, to engineers responsible for design. Though these groups operate within a shared industry framework shaped by practical experience, each relies on specialized terminology that reflects its particular focus and expertise.
Much of this language develops in the field rather than in conference rooms, which can make it difficult to establish common ground—yet doing so is important to good communication and decision-making, and increasing production on site. The list below sheds light on many of these miscellaneous site work terms and acronyms.
Miscellaneous Site Work Terms
While you may be familiar with Tensar’s expertise in geosynthetics, it’s good to review the relevant terms and their meanings, in order to fully understand which geosynthetic solution is best for a project.
Here are some of the most frequently used terms related to this work:
- Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL):
An ESAL is a standard axle load of 18,000 pounds, used to create a measure of traffic load in pavement design. Because heavier vehicles do much more damage to roads than lighter ones, this gives design engineers a way to standardize the traffic capacity a pavement can carry. - Pavement Optimization:
Pavement optimization refers to using advanced design, material selection, and structural techniques to maximize pavement lifespan and performance while minimizing costs and environmental impact. - Geotextiles:
Geotextiles are woven or non-woven fabrics used for separation, filtration, drainage, and other functions in civil engineering. - Subgrade Stabilization:
Subgrade stabilization involves enhancing the engineering properties of weak or unsuitable soils to create a stronger, more stable foundation for infrastructure. Subgrade stabilization typically increases bearing capacity, minimizes settlement, and decreases moisture-related issues. - Value Engineering:
Value engineering refers to taking a structured, team-based approach to enhancing the value of projects, products, and systems by optimizing the ratio of function to cost. - Potential Vertical Rise (PVR):
PVR is a way of measuring the potential for expansive soil to swell or lift when it’s exposed to water. This swelling and lifting (and the subsequent shrinking when the soil dries) can cause significant damage to pavements and structures.
