Tensar® NX850™ Geogrid provides a constructible solution for soft, saturated subgrade
- Engineer: Olsson
- Contractor: Ebert Construction
- Distributor: ASP
During construction of Kaw Valley Road in Wamego, Kansas, the project team encountered very soft, saturated subgrade that failed proofroll and could not support construction equipment. Cement stabilization efforts were also unsuccessful due to the poor soil and moisture conditions. The team contacted Tensar to evaluate the inplace soil strength and identify a solution that would keep the project moving.
Tensar quickly mobilized, and the next day performed on-site Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing and characterized the weak subgrade. DCP testing provides real-time information about field conditions by measuring soil resistance at varying depths, helping engineers evaluate in-place soil strength and determine an appropriate stabilization approach.
Based on the test results, Tensar recommended a stabilization section incorporating Tensar NX850 Geogrid. NX850 is an integrally formed geogrid engineered for mechanical stabilization applications. Its multidirectional structure helps improve interaction with aggregate to create a more stable, constructible surface over weak subgrades. ASP had the product in stock and delivered it quickly, helping the team maintain project momentum.
- Restored construction access over very soft, saturated subgrade.
- Eliminated the need for deep undercut of the problematic soils.
- Reduced the need for excavation and replacement aggregate.
- Helped keep construction moving with minimal delay.
