Tensar® InterAx® NX650 Geogrid Keeps BNSF Construction Moving over Variable Ground
- Owner: BNSF Railroad
- Engineer: LJA Engineering
- Contractor: W.T. Byler
- Product: Tensar® InterAx® NX650 Geogrid
The 1,200-acre BNSF Logistics Center in Gunter, Texas, required extensive site preparation before construction of warehouses, roadways, and rail infrastructure could begin. Creating a stable construction platform across the expansive site presented one of the project’s first and most significant challenges.
Alternating areas of soft soils and exposed rock complicated earthwork operations and created inconsistent subgrade conditions across the project. Without effective stabilization, the site would require substantial quantities of imported aggregate to create a suitable construction platform, increasing material demands and construction complexity. The team needed a solution that could improve ground performance and keep construction moving.
Having successfully used Tensar geogrid on previous projects, the client selected Tensar’s InterAx® NX650 geogrid to mechanically stabilize the aggregate layer and improve performance over the site’s variable subgrade. By confining aggregate and distributing loads more effectively, InterAx geogrids create a stronger, more reliable foundation for construction traffic and future pavement structures.
- Provided a consistent construction platform across variable ground conditions.
- Supported more efficient use of aggregate.
- Enabled efficient construction site-wide while minimizing the need for more
extensive traditional soil stabilization.
- Supported the owner’s schedule and cost objectives.
