Enhance Flexible Pavement Performance with Mechanically Stabilized Layers

  • Date: Thursday, October 23, 2025
  • Time: 1 PM EDT

Event Overview

In our last session, we uncovered why pavements fail too soon—whether it’s design flaws or unpredictable subgrade conditions. This time, we’ll show how a Mechanically Stabilized Layer (MSL) can boost reliability, reduce variability, and flip failure from bottom-up to top-down. It means smarter design and longer pavement life.

Topics that will be discussed include:

  • Use of AASHTO '93 and AASHTO R-50 to design flexible pavements
  • Design method incorporating modified layer-coefficients in the MSL with improved aggregate confinement and stiffer support for the asphalt
  • How this technology in asphalt results in longer life and/or reduced component thickness
  • How InterAx geogrid, the most advanced for trafficked surfaces, provides structural improvements
  • Use of Accelerated Pavement Testing and Automated Plate Load Testing to predict and verify design performance.
  • How Tensar+ software, incorporating APLT data, can be used for pavement design
