Rapid Roadway Recovery: Turning Crisis into Resilience with InterAx® technology
- Owner: Ministry of Public Works
In late 2023, disaster struck a critical city-center roadway. A massive aggregate stockpile on an adjacent lot caused a severe bulge—several feet high—destroying a key section of the road. This wasn’t just any route; it was the sole access to a major commercial hub, triggering public outcry and urgent demands for repair.
Despite soil sampling and modeling, crews struggled to achieve the compaction needed for a safe, rapid rebuild. Multiple failed attempts stalled progress, heightening safety concerns and intensifying pressure on authorities.
When Tensar joined forces with the Department of Public Works and the contractor team, the mission was clear: deliver a fast, reliable solution using available resources. Leveraging the Tensar+ design platform, our specialists quickly modeled alternatives to optimize local materials. By day’s end, the team implemented a Mechanically Stabilized Layer (MSL) using InterAx® technology and locally sourced aggregates.
The results were immediate:
- Achieved required compaction for safe reconstruction
- Restored project momentum
To ensure long-term performance and support future traffic growth, additional InterAx layers were incorporated into the new road base—minimizing deformation and enhancing durability. This rapid intervention not only resolved the crisis but also laid the foundation for a resilient, high-performing roadway.
