Townsville Port Expansion

Windlass Crossing, South Townsville

Constructed in 2025

“Tensar’s solution performed exceptionally well for our unsealed 15-hectare laydown area, with no signs of differential settlement, heaving or structural distress, storing full shipping containers and high-volume light and heavy traffic”

Mick O’Reilly | Project Director
Port of Townsville, Australia

Client Challenges

The client Port of Townsville wanted to develop this 15-hectare laydown area over reclaimed marine land, to support transportation of wind turbines. With a limited budget, the Port wanted to use as much existing rock as possible to build a stable platform on this variable, weak subgrade.

Tensar Solution

The consultant, Civil IQ specified the use of Tensar's large aparture stabilisation geogrids to support the re-use of existing coarsely graded granular aggregate where particle sizes were up to 150mm. This approach saved the Port tens of millions of dollars in aggregate procurement and cartage costs across the entire projects.
