Introduction to Environmental Production Declarations & Their Use in Construction

Duration: 1 hour   //   Attendees eligible for 1 PDH credit

An assessment of environmental impact is becoming a more common design criterion in a growing number of jurisdictions around the world. In an effort to standardize and streamline such assessments, processes have been developed to systematically determine and report the environmental impacts of the production and use of many products and materials. One of the tools created for this purpose is the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). An EPD is defined as a declaration that "quantifies environmental information on the life cycle of a product to enable comparisons between products fulfilling the same function.” The use of EPDs to assess environmental impacts such as Global Warming Potential (GWP) is growing rapidly, including in the construction industry.

In this webinar, we’ll discuss:

  • EPDs, what they are and how they are developed
  • The use of EPDs for construction products
  • How to use EPDs to properly assess projects over their entire life cycle
  • The assumptions and limitations which affect these analyses
