Innovation in Construction

Throughout history, one of the measures of human progress has been the continuous improvement of our built environment – what we now commonly refer to as infrastructure. For many centuries, this was an extremely slow process, but since the industrial revolution, advances in construction technology have accelerated dramatically.

In this session, we will look at examples of innovation in construction in three areas:

  • Information
  • Equipment
  • Materials

In each case we’ll examine the evolution of technology over the past 100-150 years, illustrating how the constant pressure to find ways to build better leads to advancements that benefit society. Many of the  technologies we take for granted today were revolutionary just a short time ago. It's intriguing to think about technologies which seem to be on today’s cutting edge will similarly become routine in the near future.
