The American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) 2017 Infrastructure Report Card gave America’s roadways a D grade, exposing the need to improve to an A+ infrastructure. One out of every five miles of highway pavement is reported to be in poor condition, and our roads have a significant and increasing backlog of rehabilitation needs.
This presentation will examine the current state of America’s deteriorating infrastructure and where our roads are headed over the next 20 years. A case study analysis will show two paths for moving forward: One path continues the traditional approaches to building new or improving upon existing roadways with decreasing budgets. The second path will present options for changing conventional roadway construction and maintenance methods to allow our roads to catch up to our increasing traffic capacity demands and life-cycle requirements.
