Staff Engineer

Department: TES Walls & Slopes
Reports to: Engineering Manager

Position Summary:
Perform engineering functions relating to mechanically-stabilized earth wall and slope applications in accordance with Tensar policies, standards of engineering practice, and project specific requirements.


  • Extract pertinent information from project documents (contract plans, specifications/special provisions, geotechnical reports, structure geometry, etc.) to develop understanding of project and identify potential design/construction issues as related to the Tensar structure (typically, mechanically-stabilized earth structures)
  • Perform engineering analyses and calculations using core design software (TensarSoil/Slope, MSEW, GSlope, Slide 7, Surficial Stability Software, etc.), hand calculations, spreadsheets, and/or additional methods
  • Use AutoCAD to develop shop drawings to present design to project stakeholders and the installer
  • Develop material quantity takeoffs based on the design prepared
  • Peer review the work of others for conformance with policies regarding application of the specific Tensar system, standards of engineering practice, and to ensure that no clerical or mathematical errors exist
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs to promote growth in engineering skills and judgment
  • Complete special projects as required by the Engineering Manager


  • BS-Civil Engineering degree required; MS-Civil Engineering degree preferred
  • Understand of the principles of soil mechanics/geotechnical engineering, especially concerning the strength properties of geotechnical materials, earth pressure theories, and slope stability
  • Functional AutoCAD skill; Civil 3D experience is preferred; general familiarity with Autodesk software is desired
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings
  • Computer proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Cooperative/Intern work experience in Civil Engineering
  • EIT registration required
