Sierra® Slope Retention System
The Sierra® Slope Retention System provides an economic and aesthetic alternative to conventional concrete retaining walls, replacing them with natural, landscaped, sloping structures nearly indistinguishable from native terrain. These graded and steepened reinforced soil slopes (RSS) typically range from 26° to 70° from horizontal, depending upon site development conditions. Unlike flatter slopes, Sierra Slope Systems claim a smaller footprint as they maximize developable land, create usable land in undeveloped areas and enhance property values.
Like our other Grade Separation Solutions, the Sierra System is a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) system. Complete and fully integrated, its components have been designed to work together for optimum efficiency and performance in a variety of site and loading conditions. Sierra Slopes significantly reduce material and installation costs by eliminating limitations imposed by varying soil properties, minimizing fill requirements and allowing the use of on-site fills. As a result, they can save up to 60% of the cost of alternative solutions such as concrete retaining walls.
And Sierra Slopes are structurally reliable. Unaffected by cracking or leaning, they’re more resistant to differential settlement or seismic activity than conventional retaining walls. Sierra Slopes are reinforced with Tensar® Geogrids; manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), this polymeric grid is inert to chemical degradation and can be used with a variety of backfill materials. Steepened slopes exceeding 45° are further secured with a combination of welded wire forms and a wrapped face of geogrid and erosion control products to provide additional stability at the face.
